Upper Eden’s winning run comes to end

Upper Eden’s winning run came to an end at Morpeth in their penultimate Regional 2 North game.

They lost 30-12 on what was a frustrating afternoon for the Pennine Park men who struggled to get into their usual rhythm and when they did make some inroads, they found themselves on the wrong side of the referee.

They had started strongly and were quick to launch an attack into the heart of the hosts 22, but a knock-on gave the advantage back to the opposition who moved the ball effectively to take play into the visitors’ half.

Good cover tackling from Matthew Sanderson, Josh Winder and Will Birkbeck slowed the play down. Eden were awarded a penalty at the ruck for Morpeth sealing off but as Sam Edgar went to retrieve the ball the referee mysteriously reversed the penalty for him approaching the Morpeth player that had the ball.

Morpeth capitalised on the opportunity, and they moved the ball wide to score an unconverted try leaving the visitors perplexed by the decision as were some of the home supporters.

From the restart Morpeth retained good possession and moved the ball wide, exposing the Eden defence to score two further tries, one of which was converted.

The Eden coaching staff made three substitutions and the introduction of Fin Rose, Issac Dent and Joss Warren had an immediate impact, giving the Cumbrians some good possession.

From a scrum on the home side’s 22 Ollie Rose made a nice break for the line to score Eden’s first try which was converted by Oliver Bennett.

Eden launched several attacks but the final pass went astray to give possession back to the opponents. However Eden’s defence was now working better with Winder, Fin Rose and Will Birkbeck to the fore and it was still 17-7 at half-time.

From the re-start Morpeth moved the ball wide to their winger to score a converted try and it was now an uphill struggle for the visitors.

But the Eden forwards gathered themselves and started to make inroads into the opposition’s half with effective short drives and some good interplay with the backs. However Civil left the pitch with an injury following a big collision in midfield.

Although the Eden forwards were dominating the set scrum the penalties were mysteriously awarded to the retreating home pack.

Rob Dent and brother Issac were combining well with Will Birkbeck at the line-out and the Pennine Park forwards continued to dominate the set scrum, pushing their opponents off the ball.

Ollie Rose made several good breaks from the ruck and set-piece, feeding the ball out wide for Josh Warren to make good yards. Will Birkbeck also combined well with his brother James, but the Morpeth defence was strong, and they nullified the attack.

When the Morpeth forwards produced a series of short drives to take play into the visitor’s half, they were awarded a penalty which was converted, and Eden lost Travis Simpson to a yellow card.

Following the re-start the Eden forwards worked wel,l producing a series of short drives to take play into the heart of the home sides defence for James Birkbeck to drive over and touchdown for Eden’s second try which went unconverted.

In the final minutes of the game Morpeth were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which they duly converted. Ollie Rose was Eden’s man of the match.

  • A youthful Upper Eden Boars faced stiff opposition against an experienced Morpeth Edwardians side but were always in contention before losing a hard-fought contest 37-26. Try scorers were Kyle Birkbeck, Jake Edgar, Warren Porter and Mark Tyson with three conversions from Sam Burrell. Man of the match was Brad Chapman.
