Police and other agencies have met to put plans in place to make sure people stay safe during Workington’s Uppies and Downies.
The traditional mass no rules football game takes place on Good Friday, Easter Tuesday and the following Saturday.
It has no formal organiser and usually attracts large crowds.
Extra police officers and resources will be deployed for the events to ensure they pass safely for all.
Chief Superintendent Matt Kennerley, of Cumbria police, said “We want people to enjoy the event, but we are asking people to think about their safety and look out for each other.
“Those taking part need to be aware of their surroundings and take particular care. We will have officers in the area to support a safe event.”
Officers have been speaking with businesses and local communities ahead of the event to provide advice.
People are advised to consider where they park on game days to avoid potential damage and visitors are urged to take care.
Parents are urged to speak to their children if they intend to attend the events to make sure they are aware of the safety advice.
People should be especially careful of the risks posed by large crowds, leading to potentially serious injuries, as well as trips, sprains and bruises, police said.
Those taking part are asked to be particularly careful when entering or considering entering any water.
