
Workington Reds face two sides over Easter who are desperately trying to stay in the NPL Premier Division.
At least one of them, possibly both, will go down as they battle the drop with Basford and Bradford PA.
Reds travel to Stafford Rangers tomorrow and then entertain Atherton Collieries on Monday.
Danny Grainger has six games left in charge before he leaves the Borough Park club and is determined to go out on a high.
These are two games he will certainly have targeted as the last four are against sides challenging for a play-off place – Worksop and Macclesfield (both away) and Marine and Guiseley (both at home).
So one way or another Reds could influence who might go up and who could go down, making for an interesting conclusion to the season.
Grainger’s confirmed successor Mark Fell won’t be taking over until the end of April when Reds have completed all their fixtures, although he does plan to watch as many of the last six games as possible.
In the Northern League, Carlisle City are first into action with a home game this afternoon against Guisborough.
City had an important win at Redcar Athletic last week, thanks to a late goal from Dan Kirkup, and are still mathematically in the hunt for a play-off place.
But Jim Nichols’ side can’t afford any further slip-ups and virtually have to win their last five games to give themselves a chance of making the top five.
Guisborough are sixth, one place and three points better off than their City hosts – and the visitors also have a game in hand.
Penrith play on Saturday when they travel to West Allotment Celtic – which is 12th against 15th.
It’s been a season of progress by Darren Edmondson’s men and after briefly reaching the top half of the table, a few disappointing results have checked their progress.
But included in that sequence was a very good 1-1 draw at promotion-chasing West Auckland, just a few days after losing 5-0 to their hosts back at Frenchfield.
In the North West Counties Kendal Town have to put in another winning sequence to get back into contention for a play-off place.
After a winless January they then put together a six-match winning run but are currently on a three-game losing sequence which has knocked them off course.
It’s that sort of inconsistency which has de-railed their season after such a brilliant start when they led the table for over a month.
But progress made by the Parkside Road club on and off the field has been marked by improved attendances and more enjoyable match day experiences, testament to the efforts of chairman Michael O’Neill and his hard-working committee.
On Saturday they entertain Glossop North End and like Carlisle City in the Northern League they simply have to win it….. and keep on winning.
Holker Old Boys, in Division One North travel to second-in-the-table Atherton LR. The Furness side still have aspirations to make the play-offs, as they do have games in hand of most of those ahead of them.
Atherton, though, are not one of them and are 11 points better off than the south Cumbrians from the same number of games so it will be a tough test.
In the West Lancashire League Cleator Moor Celtic are at home to Milnthorpe Corinthians on Saturday and looking to get back on track after a narrow defeat at home to Burscough Richmond last week.
Whitehaven don’t have a game this weekend.
It’s a big day for Windscale with a Good Friday date at Richmond Town in the final of the Alan Hood Charity Cup final.
Their league campaign has been badly hit over the last month with a crop of injuries but one or two have been getting back to fitness and the Atoms hope to be able to take a strong squad for this afternoon’s showdown.
