Penrith virtually ended Carlisle City’s play-off challenge with a 2-0 win at Frenchfield.
It was a deserving win for Darren Edmondson’s men who collected the points from two first-half goals.
Robbie Hebson netted on 19 minutes and Luke Brown doubled the lead nine minutes later.
Edmondson said: “It was a really pleasing performance and I think we were deserving winners, the better team for most of the game.
“I thought we were particularly good in the first-half when we were full of energy and bright, taking our goals well – and might have had a bigger advantage.
“City moved the ball around better in the second-half but I think we restricted them to a couple of half chances.
“I think we can take a lot of confidence from that win and look forward to another home game on Saturday against West Allotment Celtic.”
City manager Jim Nichols accepted that Penrith had been the better side.
“I don’t think we deserved to get anything out of the game because we just weren’t at it enough.
“We huffed and puffed a bit in the second-half but didn’t take advantage of the few chances that we did manage to create.
“To add to a disappointing day we lost two key players. Dan Kirkup had to go off in the first half and then later we lost Rob McCartney with what looked a serious looking knee injury.
“But we ant to finish as high as we can. We are already over 20 points better than last season and look forward to getting back to form on Saturday at home to Northallerton.”
