Downies were victorious in the second game of Workington’s mass no rules football game.
Uppies and Downies has been played in the town for hundreds of years – with Uppies trying to get the specially made ball to the gates of Workington Hall and Downies trying to get it to Workington harbour.
Families play the game – and many have for generations – including Tuesday night hailer Dan Fryer. It was his second ball and his family have hailed several over the years.
it was a hard-fought game, lasting around four hours and he managed to give the Downies a much-needed win, after Uppie Robert Irving hailed the ball on Good Friday. The third and final game will be played on Saturday – and both sides will be out in force to make sure they claim the bragging rights.
We’ll be covering it live from 6pm on Saturday – and we’ve got loads more photos from Good Friday and Tuesday to share – keep checking back to see them!
