Young bird sale to support transporter fund

The Derwent Valley Federation is holding a special young bird sale on Sunday to raise funds for their transporter fund.

Young birds have been donated from top fanciers in the Derwent Valley as well as the West Cumberland, East Cumberland, Solway and Furness Federations.

Other youngsters will be offered for sale from other leading fanciers based outside the county.

The sale is being held in the Senhouse Street Club, Workington and the birds will be accepted into the pens for 11.30am with the sale starting at 1pm.

One of the main organisers of the Transporter fund has been a leading Workington fancier Richard Martindale.

He said: “We have to date raised £24,000 when I receive the money from the last of our sales on the RPRA Auction site. We also have another sale running at the moment.

“Currently the money is in a high interest account and £4,5000 of that was used for the purchase of the Geraldy trailer and grills for crates.

“Going forward we would like to purchase a three to five ton truck (£18,0000-£20,000) and have it converted to carry the same crates as the Geraldy trailer.

“The truck and the trailer will both hold approximately 1,200 birds. This will be more than sufficient to continue transporting both Federations in the Amalgamation.

“Obviously on longer races when the birdage drops to under 1,200 then the trailer will not be required unless we are required to take the Cumbria Combine birds.”

The new racing season starts next weekend (April 13).
