On Good Friday Barrow lost at Whitehaven to a last-minute drop goal – but the boot was on the other foot this afternoon.
Brad Walker put over a 79th minute drop goal to earn the Raiders their first win of the Championship season, 15-14 at home to York City Knights.
In a hard-fought, tight contest Paul Crarey’s men came out with the closest of victories, having only drawn level with the Knights five minutes from the end.
A grubber from Brad Walker was collected by Ryan Johnston and from the play-the-ball Luke Cresswell dummied and went under the sticks. Ryan Shaw’s conversion made it 14-14.
Then in the last minute Johnston fashioned the pass which allowed Walker to drop the winning point.
After a strong start from the Knights they went in front on 17 minutes with an unconverted try from Will Jubb, who dummied and crashed over.
Gradually Barrow built pressure and in a late surge before half-time grabbed the lead with two unconverted tries.
On 36 minutes a hard drive towards the posts was suddenly switched left and Ryan Shaw had enough room to get in for the try.
Three minutes later great hands released Max Clarke and he got over for the second try but Storm Kathleen made Shaw’s conversion attempts swirl wide.
York came back on 63 minutes when they regained the lead as Oliver Field twisted out of a tackle to touchdown.
Ten minutes from the end York scored again to open up a six-point lead, This time it was Charlie Severs who got over but the conversion attempt fell short in the wind.
York were also looking for their first Championship win and were inching towards it when Barrow drew level – and then snatched that late drop goal victory.
