Whitehaven were undone in a 15-minute second-half spell as Sheffield Eagles cut loose and eventually won 42-16 at the Orcus REC.
Jonty Gorley’s men had played some good rugby in the first-half and were very much in contention with the Eagles leading 12-10.
However by the time they scored a third try Whitehaven were well out of it and Sheffield had the points in the bag.
After Ross Ainley had been held up on the line Haven moved the ball wide and Jake Maizen scored a nice try in the corner.
More pressure on the Sheffield line should have produced a second try but the ball was lost and it proved costly as Sheffield scored on their next set.
Anthony Thackeray got in for the try which Cory Aston converted but back came Whitehaven to grab the lead again. Ryan King produced a lovely step to bemuse the Sheffield defence and score the try which Jake Carter improved.
Whitehaven spilled another chance from a cross-field kick and then had a spell of defence to deny a Sheffield surge.
Eventually the defence was breached and a try from Bayley Liu in the corner, improved by Aston allowed the Eagles to go into the break with a narrow lead.
Sheffield started to take control of the game in the second half and were particularly effective on Whitehaven’s right hand edge.
Aston, Izaac Farrell, Matty Marsh and Matty Dawson Jones went in for tries in quick succession which were converted by Aston and the game had got away from Haven.
Marsh scored his second before King went in for his second try and Carter converted but it was a disappointing end to a game which had started promisingly.
