Both West Cumbrian clubs had their away fixtures postponed in the West Lancashire Premier Division on Saturday.
Cleator Moor Celtic had been due to travel to Coppull United but heavy rain had produced a waterlogged pitch.
Whitehaven were due to play at Wyre Villa and at 9-30am were told by their hosts that the pitch was 90% playable and was expected to dry out by kick-off time.
The Cumbrians duly travelled but what followed next wasn’t good.
Whitehaven manager Jon-Karl Benson said: “On arrival I was shocked they allowed us to travel. A 20ft by 20ft square from the centre of one penalty area to the corner flag was basically sludge with three places under water.
“I wasn’t happy to risk injury to any of my players and the referee agreed.
“After that we were called all sorts of names but we had travelled at strength and wasn’t going to risk anyone in those conditions. They are relegated!”
