Workington Reds boss Danny Grainger was a lot happier with his team’s performance in their 2-1 defeat at Worksop.
“I’m a bad loser, I hate getting beat but I had asked the team for a response after Monday and I got one.
“We were up against a very good side with players who could easily be at a level higher and if we could just have got a second goal after we led then who knows how it might have finished,” he said.
Lewis Reilly had put Reds ahead from the penalty spot and then Dav Symington, their top scorer was through one-on-one with the keeper when a defender got back to make a superb tackle.
Reds had led at half-time but two second-half goals from Liam Hughes in the 65th and 69th minutes gave Worksop the points to maintain their push for a promotion place.
Workington had to do a lot of defending but for the most part did really well with Jordan Little and Sam Smith both having big games.
Reds are back in action on Wednesday night at Borough Park with a Fred Conway Cumberland Cup semi-final against Maryport Athletic.
The final has been arranged for Borough Park, too, with the winners from Tuesday taking on Carlisle United on Tuesday, April 23.
A win on Wednesday would give Reds something to seriously play for as they also fit in three NPL Premier Division games against Marine (home, Saturday April 13); Macclesfield (away, Saturday April 20) and Guiseley (home, Saturday April 27).
Retaining the County Cup, after their win last season, would be a nice way for Grainger to end his second spell in charge of the Reds.
