Maryport Athletic still have plenty of play for after losing their Fred Conway County Cup semi-final to Workington Reds.
Athletic went down 3-0 but earned respect and applause for their performance in dreadful weather conditions at Borough Park.
Assistant manager Justin Booty said: “We were very pleased with how the lads performed. It’s all fine margins and we were a bit unlucky in how close we were to scoring only for Reds to break and score.
“We had hit the bar and they immediately broke down field and took the lead and soon afterwards were had a one-on-one with the keeper but couldn’t score. And it was the same, they broke through again and scored a second.
“Maybe Reds took the foot off the gas when they scored a third but we did have our moments later on and overall it was a decent effort against a strong Workington side.”
Athletic, who lead the County League, will win the title if they beat Whitehaven Miners Social at home in their final game a week on Saturday. They currently have a five point lead over Aspatria who have two games to play.
But there’s more than the League to look forward to for the Maryport side as they are chasing silverware on three other fronts.
It starts on Wednesday when they play Wigton Harriers in the final of the Benevolent Cup at Carlisle City’s Gillford Park.
In the Whitehaven Cup they have reached the semi-final and are waiting to find out their opponents, Wigton Harriers or Whitehaven reserves.
They are also still playing the groups of the Ken Glover Memorial Trophy and it’s in this format that they have been giving some of their younger players opportunities in senior football.
Maryport Athletic are definitely a club on the rise – and their trophy cabinet should emphasise that in a few weeks time.
