Windscale travelled across to Silksworth last night to contest the first of their final 10 Wearside League fixtures.
Following the euphoria of winning the Alan Hood Charity Cup over the Easter weekend, Silksworth brought the Atoms back to earth inflicting a 6-1 defeat on the visitors.
With Silksworths grass pitch waterlogged the game was switched to a 3G facility to ensure the game went ahead.
Playing with the wind in the first period, it took the Atoms a little time to adjust to the pace but still looking dangerous, creating opportunities behind the hosts who were playing a high defensive line.
However, it was Silksworth who opened the scoring in fortunate circumstances. The ball was flashed across the six yard box heading towards Windscale keeper Lee Jolly but a wicked deflection gave Alex Thompson giving him the simplest task of tapping the ball home at the far post.
Windscale levelled the scores five minutes later. Lewis Selkirk raced down the left into the Silksworth box and picked out Lewis Jolly who slipped the ball into the net at the back post.
This boosted the Atoms, who went on to create further chances, with Selkirk and Jolly each seeing shots gratefully grasped by home keeper Lewis Charlton.
Silksworth regained the lead with five minutes of the first period remaining. A wicked free kick found Josh Perry unmarked at the back post and he accepted the opportunity to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at the break.
They increased their lead shortly after the restart. Perry turned his man and set up Harry Fisher perfectly to fire the ball home from an angle.
The Atoms offered very little after this, appearing deflated and increasingly heavy legged as they conceded three further goals. Joss Williams, Nathan Bennett and Harry Munday were each on the score-sheet to hand the three points to the hosts.
Midweek fixtures are always difficult for player availability due to work, family and other commitments, so great credit must go to the Windscale squad who made themselves available for this game.
Another difficult fixture awaits this week-end when they travel again to take on Shotton Colliery.
Following on from this they have three away fixtures left with five at the Falcon Complex, hopefully providing the opportunity to improve their position in the league table and complete their season by the Wearside Leagues deadline date of May 11.
