The M6 northbound and two lanes southbound have now reopened after a lorry overturned and shed its load near Clifton.
Police kept the roads closed until at early this morning, Saturday 13 April.
The incident caused severe delays throughout the day, with some drivers reporting queueing for over four hours.
National Highways traffic officers and recovery personnel were in attendance and a statement from the organisation said a complex recovery and clear up operation was taking place.
Teams also dealt with a significant diesel and oil spill across all lanes including the hard shoulder as well as damage to the carriageway and safety barrier.
