A number of litter picks have been organised by police and partners with support from employees at Morgan Sindall in the continued work to improve ‘The Line’ in Workington.

The litter picks will take place on 18 April and 2 May between 10am and 2pm, with equipment being provided by Cumberland Council. Members of the public are welcome to help tidy up the area with partners.

Officers have already started work in a bid to make the The Line a safer place by clearing overgrown vegetation cleared to help make it a more open and lighter space.

Adding new signage and covering graffiti are next on the list to further improve the area.

The work to improve The Line is supported Safer Streets Funding came from a successful bid to the Home Office from the Office of the Police Fire and Crime Commissioner.

Sergeant Scott Adams from Workington’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This is the next phase in making ‘The Line’ a place people feel safe walking and enjoy.

“We started this project after women and girls told us they didn’t feel safe due to anti-social behaviour and drug use.

“From feedback we have received so far, its already becoming a more welcoming place for dog walkers and runners.

“Removing the litter will further clean up the area, and we thank our partners and Morgan Sindall for supporting in making our area a better place.”

Emma Thompson, Allerdale local focus hub manager added: “The Local Focus Hub partners support ‘The Line’ project to enhance our spaces and improve the feeling of safety in our communities.

“The Violence Against Women and Girls agenda is a priority for the Local Focus Hub partnership, we want to work alongside our community to make a sustainable change to this popular access route into Workington Town Centre.

“Thank you to all of our partners and our wonderful residents who support these events with their time.”

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been working in the nuclear sector in Cumbria for well over a decade. In addition to its work, the company has also committed to having a positive socioeconomic impact in the region.

Kath Walker, community engagement advisor from Morgan Sindall says: “We’re delighted to be involved in this fantastic project as part of our commitment to enhancing the communities in which we work. For us, this project achieves so much.

“First, it’s taking action so an eyesore becomes a community asset. Second, it’s getting young people involved in improving and looking after where they live.

“Finally, it supports our Sow, Grow and Share campaign, which encourages Morgan Sindall Infrastructure employees to connect more with the outdoors to support good mental health and well-being. The work being undertaken is a win all around.”
