Friends of the Ullswater Way has added a special talk to its 2024 Understanding Ullswater Evening Talk programme.
It will take place on Wednesday, April 24, at 7.30pm in Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge and by Zoom and will be given by Amy Bray on How can we find Another Way for Ullswater? Solving the global climate and nature crisis starting here at home.
Amy Bray is a 21-year-old marine biologist and CEO of environmental education charity Another Way which she founded when she was 16.
Through Another Way, she has planted over 30,000 trees in Cumbria, has given talks and awareness sessions on climate change, plastic pollution and sustainable living to over 10,000 people from schools, community groups, businesses and international events.
She has recently created a pilot app, The Power of 10, to bring together young changemakers from around the world into a digital community to massively scale up action on climate change and well-being.
She is a patron of Friends of the Lake District, a committee member for the UN Decade of Ocean Science, a trustee of Cumbria Wildlife Trust, an ambassador for The Tree Council and has received Cumbria Woman of the Year 2019 and the Prime Minister’s Point of Light Award for her work.
Her talk will illustrate how the application of this approach can radically change the way conservation in and around Ullswater is addressed, and how young people can become engaged in this process.
Gordon Lightburn, chair of the FOUW, said: “Unifying and educating groups to find some commonality in sustainable living is key to our future.
“Passionate and pro-active, Amy has been inspirational in her engagement toward stimulating the necessary changes needed in the ways that we may live, love and look after our planet. Sustainability (as with charity) begins at home! – We look forward to Amy’s insights and a thought-provoking presentation.”
The talk is free, but a minimum donation of £5 is suggested and 100% of the donations received will go to Another Way’s Big Green Give Week, during which all donations will be doubled. Register with Tim Clarke at info@ullswaterheritage.org. A Zoom link will be sent a day before the talk to those who cannot attend in person.
