Whitehaven put up a good effort against a strong Netherfield side in the ECB National Cup before going under by 22 runs.
The West Cumbrians had travelled without Chase Young and skipper Stephen Holliday who had played prominent roles in Saturday’s opening Cumbria League win over Furness.
Whitehaven invited Netherfield to bat first and they made steady progress, from 52-1 to 133-2 with good contributions from Josh Dixon (48) and Will Beeden (42).
Netherfield then began to lose wickets as spinners Lewis Keeler and Terance Warde followed-up Saturday’s performances with excellent spells.
Warde finished with 4-28 from his eight overs and a similar tight spell Keeler had 1-22. Opening bowler Billy Thompson took 2-22 while a late salvo from Isaac Medhurst (25 off 189 balls) took Netherfield to 210-8 from their 40 overs.
Although Haven made a brisk reply they lost wickets at regular intervals before Leo Sanczuk (24) and Jonathan Stewart (24) steadied the ship.
The innings gained fresh impetus when young Kian Larmour came to the crease and hit a quick 41 before he was run out.
It was left to Keeler to demonstrate what a fine all-rounder he is with a sparkling 65 off only 47 deliveries, and which included five sixes and four fours.
The innings ended at 188 all out from 35.5 overs with Medhurst (3-45) the most successful Netherfield bowler.
