A Cumbrian castle will be putting on a weekend of brass bands this summer.
On July 13 and 14, Lowther Castle will host a celebration of Cumbrian brass.
The event – organised by Kirkby Stephen-based Drum and Brass in collaboration with the Cumbria Brass Network and funded by the Arts Council – will be a grand celebration of Cumbria’s rich brass band heritage.
From Eden to Copeland, from Allerdale to South Lakeland and from Barrow to Carlisle, there are bands the length and breadth of the county.
Their roots are multiple – from colliery bands, to marching bands, to bands with military ties. All of them have proud links to their communities, many of them have been going since the 19th century and together they weave a fascinating tapestry of local history and culture.
Julie Hoggarth, event co-ordinator, said: “We are looking forward to a great family-centred event.
“Besides open air performances by individual bands, there will be workshops suitable for all ages.
“From beginners to seasoned musicians, everyone will be invited to pick up an instrument.
“Brass at the Castle will not just be a momentary affair but a commitment to preserving a unique slice of our social and cultural heritage.”
