A woman has appeared in court accused of causing the deaths of two pedestrians by dangerous driving in West Cumbria.
Bethanie Clark, 31, and David Muir, 43, were both pronounced dead at the scene having been found lying in the road on the A596 in Flimby on May 15 2022.
Police attended having been called by a member of the public just after midnight on that date.
Today, Jade Devine, 32, appeared at Workington Magistrates’ Court where she faced a total of five charges.
Two allege that she caused the deaths of Miss Clark and Mr Muir by driving a Nissan Qashqai dangerously on the A596 at Flimby on May 15 2022.
Two additional and alternative charges allege that Devine caused the deaths of Miss Clark and Mr Muir by driving without due care and attention, and at a time when Devine was unfit to drive through drink.
A fifth charge alleges that Devine was concerned in the supply of class A controlled drug cocaine on the same date.
During a short hearing in front of a district judge who appeared over a video link from Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, Devine spoke to confirm her name, date of birth and an address of Andersons Court, Flimby.
No pleas were entered to the charges. The two alleging causing death by dangerous driving are classed as indictable only, which means they can only be dealt with at a crown court.
Devine’s case was sent by the district judge, John Temperley, to Carlisle Crown Court.
Devine is due to appear there for a plea and case management hearing on June 11, and in the meantime has been granted bail.
In a tribute released via Cumbria police after her death, Bethanie’s mother said her daughter was one in a million.
She added: “Her heart was immense, and she was the most caring person anyone could meet. She put everyone and everything before herself.”
