A South Lakes primary and nursery school is celebrating 70 years of education.
South Walney Infant and Nursery School, based on Amphitrite Street, brought current pupils, staff, past pupils and parents together for a day to mark the milestone birthday.

Visitors and pupils dressed up under a 1950s theme for the occasion and buried a time capsule to give future students a glimpse of life in 2024.
Each class also wrote a message for the time capsule, to give future generations insight into how the school has continued to develop.

Performances were also held on the day including maypole dancing, rock and roll moves and the school song. Traditional games including hula hoops and hopscotch were also played and a picnic was held.
Visitors to the school were then treated to an afternoon of reminiscing and refreshments for the wider school community with photographs of past pupils and events on display.
Headteacher Becs Ensoll said she felt it had been a wonderful and well-attended celebration that showed how many people are connected to the school.
She added: “We were delighted to see so many past pupils and former staff back at school to join in what was a very special day for South Walney Infant and Nursery School.

“We had some of the schools very first pupils come along and talk about their happy school days and even some who had gone on to get married.”
A cake in the school’s colours was also made by past parent Janette Currie and decorated with books named with each class and tiny handprints round the edge.

The cake was cut together by three headteachers as a way of linking past and present together.
South Walney Infant and Nursery School has recently applied to join South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust in autumn 2024.
