Workington Reds have re-signed top scorer Dav Symington for the 2024/25 season after he had been courted by a variety of rival managers.

Symington, 30, has committed himself to the Workington cause for a ninth successive season, following his early career with Carlisle United.

He was Workington’s top scorer last season, just missing out on the NPL Premier Division Golden Boot. He netted 24 goals in the League and another two in the County Cup.

Symington has been Reds Player of the Year for the last two seasons and was included in the NPL West Team of the Year last season. It’s anticipated that he will be in the Premier Division Team of the Season.

After signing he said: “I did have team interested this summer, I won’t lie, but being a local lad from Workington none of them would have felt like home, so it was a no-brainer to stay.

“I’m really looking forward to this season. It’s a fresh start for everyone and with some new players coming in too. We have a new gaffer with different ideas and different style to previous managers we’ve had but it’s looking rea;;y positive and I can’t wait to get started.”

Symington is the first of Reds’ retained players to commit to the new season and agree terms, while Kai Nugent was the first new face – although well regarded from a loan spell which ended 12 months ago.
