Cockermouth Wasps, looking for a quick return to Regional 2 North after relegation, have announced a new coaching team.

Chris Wright, who took the reins again at the start of last season was only going to do it for a limited time following the departure of Jeff Clare to Aspatria.

Taking over as head coach for 2024/25 will be Stephen Reed, a successful coach with the club’s Colts and also in the Cumbria set-up.

Wright said: “With a number of quality young players moving into senior rugby alongside Reedy to join the current senior squad we know its going to be a good season.”

Working with Reed in the role of senior director of rugby will be the vastly experienced Jeff Peet, a player at Moresby and Cockermouth alongside many quality players.

Wright said: “Coaching the Wasps, and being involved with a number of recent coaches at the club, Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and experiences to the 24/25 season.”

There will also be a number of assistant coaches next season – Ian McDowell, Matt Lynch, Mike Edwards and John Irving.

Other positions: Strength and conditioning – Luke Reeson; Club captain – Tom Peet; First team captain – TBC; Second team captain – TBC. Team managers/first aid – Mark Astley and Kathryn Reed; Physio – Rob Barton.

Wright will be the club’s volunteer co-ordinator, grants officer and business committee member. He’s also joining the Colts Ospreys with current coaches Richard Black and Tim Green.
