Workington Town Women FC has announced it will be formally teaming up with Allerdale Girls FC with immediate effect.
A period of transition will follow this announcement while administration work is carried out, but by the start of the new season, the junior and summer league section of Allerdale Girls FC will be known as Workington Town Girls FC and will carry the same badge and identical strip as Workington Town Women FC.
Workington Town had been operating as Workington Reds Ladies but after a successful venue switch to the Fibrus Community Stadium have adopted the club name.
The collaboration with Allerdale Girls is seen as an essential, and hugely important step forward by both clubs.
On the merger, Workington Town Women’s manager Paul Mackenzie said: “This is a big opportunity for us to grow as an organisation and offer a clear pathway to adult football to young footballers with aspirations to play at the highest level they can locally.
“John Barber has been the figurehead of Allerdale Girls FC since its conception 13 years ago and he and the many other people involved with the club have done an amazing job over that time.
“Our new structure will ensure that both clubs will continue to influence their own operations, but will also benefit from an overarching philosophy that reflects the aims of the organisation.
“It is also important for us to make people aware that this move will strengthen Workington Town Women and our aims to attract the best players available in the years to come.
“I’d also like to make it clear that opportunities to join us as an adult footballer will always be open to players, irrespective of their background in junior football.
The move will see nearly 300 female footballers coming together and will strengthen the opportunities across the full playing lifecycle for our community.
Allerdale Girls FC’s founder, John added: “We are all immensely proud of Allerdale Girls Football Club and what many people have helped to build over the years.
“It is clear that those representing Workington Town Women FC respect the work we have done and they value what an organisation like ours brings to the table.
“Similarly, we can see the value in the moves that they have made over recent years, culminating in their name change for the coming season. Us joining together is an extremely important and powerful move forward in our joint desire to deliver the best we can for the football players we represent.”
