Plans to repair and improve Millom Library have been submitted to Cumberland Council.
NDA Properties wants to carry out the work at the building in St George’s Road.
The applicant manages non-nuclear buildings and assets for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and wants to create offices at the building.
Plans for a change of use were approved two years ago, and plans were in the pipeline to create a hub for up to 100 NDA workers.
According to a planning statement the building was last used as council offices and the town’s library.
It said: “The current building has seen little maintenance and investment in recent years and is in a poor state of repair.
“The building was originally constructed as a library, but in 1995 permission was granted for alterations to form a new local government centre.
“Millom Library is not a listed building, however most of the property sits within the Millom Conservation Area. The rear annex to the main library building does not sit within the conservation area, nor does the car park to the rear of the building.
“Considering that part of the application boundary is situated within a Conservation Area, this application is also supported by a Heritage Statement prepared by Avison Young.”
The project would involve external alterations to Millom Library:
- Removal and rebuild of the two main end chimney stacks at the north west and south east elevation of the building;
- Removal of the central ancillary chimney;
- Replacement of all windows; and
- Replacement of stone and brickwork and roof repairs.
The application is currently being considered by planning officers at the council.
