Seventeen-year-old Laylen Richardson had an afternoon to remember yesterday when he received a late call-up to the British Under-21s final at Glasgow.
Richardson, a member of the Workington Meteors, was one of two reserves for the prestigious meeting at Ashfield.
It wasn’t a wasted trip, either, as he got two rides and was actually leading in heat eleven after gating really well.
But Vinnie Foord and the Pijper brothers, Ace and Stene, all hauled him in and he finished out of the points.
He was out again in heat 17 but didn’t make the start this time and had to follow home Ashton Boughen, Jody Scott and Jake Mulford.
But despite collecting no points it was an unforgettable experience and provided him with a valuable taste of a big meeting.
Mark Parker was the other reserve and the Carlisle rider has been in the Edinburgh Academy side this year.
He also had two rides, picking up a point for third in heat eight after Luke Killeen got himself in a tangle on the final bend.
Sam Hagon, the eventual champion on the day, won the race with Dan Thompson in second place.
In heat 14, Parker followed home Ben Trigger, Nathan Ablitt and former Comet Luke Harrison.
Hagon won the final from Leon Flint with Boughen in third and Joe Thompson finishing fourth.
