Former Workington Comets rider Charles Wright was in imperious form last night as Redcar Bears gave their Cab Direct Championship campaign a massive boost with a 47-43 win at Plymouth.
The Bears completed successive league victories with Wright ultra-impressive as the Bears’ No.1 racked up 17 points from six rides, including taking the win in the last-heat decider.
Wright was well backed by Jason Edwards with 11 whilst reserve Ben Trigger scored seven on his return to the Coliseum.
Wright was up against current Workington heat leader Troy Batchelor who was guesting for the Gladiators and helped himself to 12 + 1, while Alfie Bowtell scored 13+2. However, the hosts were hampered by the withdrawal of Ben Barker with rib damage after a first ride crash.
Redcar will find it a lot tougher tonight when they continue their southern tour at Poole who have the chance to move to the top of the Cab Direct Championship with a home win.
They are currently second, two points behind the Comets but with three matchers in hand.
The Pirates have a 100 per cent record from three matches so far and that includes a 61-29 home win against the Comets.
They will host the Bears with Vinnie Foord making his debut having signed for the club at reserve.
Meanwhile the Bears have Justin Sedgmen guesting for Danny King who misses out on a return to his former club as he remains sidelined due to injury.
Pirates promoter Dan Ford said: “We have made the semi-final stages of two competitions already this year so the treble remains our target.
“But to do that we have to keep picking up league points, which means not just winning but winning by a decent margin when we are hosting the first leg of a tie.”
Bears boss Gavin Parr said: “We are going there to win. However, if we can score 40+ points we will be in a good position for the aggregate point, so that will be one of our primary aims.”
