Barrow fans would have been delighted to see Zach Eckersley play for Wigan in the Challenge Cup final – and score the opening try in an 18-8 victory over Warrington.
For the 20-year-old centre spent time on loan with the Raiders last season and played in three games for the south Cumbrians.
Since then Barrow have cemented a dual registration agreement with Wigan and have had several of their players on short term loan deals.
A week ago Eckersley had no thoughts of being included in the Wigan starting line-up, until a three-match suspension for regular centre Adam Keighran opened up the possibility.
Speaking after the game Oldham-born Eckersley told reporters: “It’s been a bit surreal as when I started the year the last thing I expected was playing in this game.”
In fact it was only his fifth appearance for the Warriors and the first time that he had played in the Challenge Cup.
He added: “Our coach Matty Peet called me last Monday after the ban was confirmed for Adam and told me I would be playing. Since then I was so excited, but nervous as well which I suppose is understandable.
“When the game started I got involved quickly and after the try, and the fans were roaring and I didn’t know how to feel but when it was confirmed as a try I was really buzzing.
“Obviously everyone dreams of scoring at Wembley so it’s a dream come true.”
Paul Crarey, the Barrow coach, said: “He was great to work with, worked hard with a good attitude and he had great fast feet. All the Wigan lads we have had have all been excellent, especially in their attitude to a loan.”
