Carlisle car parks will close so work can be carried out to improve them.

Swifts Bank Car Park will close from Saturday, June 15, for around two weeks, weather permitting. Work will start on Monday, June 17.

During this period, The Sands Car Park will remain fully operational.

Once work is completed at Swifts Bank Car Park, the project will move to the Sands Car Park.

Cumberland Council said it anticipated it would be closed for around eight weeks, weather permitting.

During this period, Swifts Bank Car Park will be reopen and will be available for public use.

The essential improvement work will include resurfacing both car parks, as well as the junction of Newmarket Road and Newark Terrace, enhancements to the lighting, drainage, and general infrastructure, and a new parking layout with wider, more user-friendly parking bays.

General guidance

GLL members, while using the leisure centre facilities, are encouraged to continue using the centre’s terminals to register their vehicle for parking.

Parking will be permitted in The Sands Car Park from Monday June 15, for two weeks and Swifts Bank Car Park from Monday June 29 (weather permitting), for a further eight weeks.

Saver Parking Permit Holders will have their permits valid in both The Sands and Swifts Bank Car Parks during the work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the work, with signs provided for guidance.

Access for NHS patients attending physiotherapy sessions will also be maintained, with access to blue badge parking bays in The Sands Centre Car Park continued.

Arrangements for school swimming coach and bus drop-off and pick-up point are subject to potential alterations.
