Former Cumbrian MP Rory Stewart has endorsed the Conservative candidate for the Carlisle seat in the 2024 General Election, John Stevenson.

Rory Stewart, who was MP for Penrith and the Border from 2010 to 2019, worked alongside Mr Stevenson on many issues, including the 2015 floods.

Mr Stewart, who also served as a minister in four departments and as Secretary of State for International Development in 2019, is now most well known now for hosting the popular podcast The Rest is Politics.

Mr Stewart said: “I am delighted to give a personal endorsement to John. As a neighbouring MP and friend I worked closely with John. He was an outstanding committed constituency MP doing a great job for Carlisle helping it secure a significant amount of investment for the area.

“I would encourage everyone in Carlisle constituency to back John.”

Mr Stevenson said: “I am very pleased that Rory has chosen to endorse me. I am looking forward to continuing to be a strong voice for Carlisle and all the border area. I want to make sure that every part of this new constituency receives it’s fair share of attention and investment.”
