Budget supermarket chain Aldi says it remains committed to its plans for a new store in Egremont.
It also wants to build a new store in Whitehaven and Egremont townsfolk feared it would put proposals for their town in jeopardy.
But Aldi said it remained committed to both towns and is working on both plans simultaneously.
It revealed it wanted to build a £6 million supermarket on the site of the former East Road Garage in Egremont in November. The development would create 40 jobs, the firm said.
The company also wants to build a store in Whitehaven and concerns have been raised that it would replace the Egremont scheme – but Aldi said it was confident there was enough demand from shoppers to have both supermarkets.

But a spokesman for Aldi said: “We are committed to serving the communities of Whitehaven and Egremont and submitted planning applications to Cumberland Council for new stores at both locations in November 2023 and February 2024, respectively.
“Since these applications were submitted, we have been working with Cumberland Council to progress our plans and hope that they will both be determined by the planning committee in the coming months.
“We are confident that there is demand for new stores at both locations and believe that our proposals will help to reduce travel times for many of our customers.”
