Carlisle woman in court accused of attempting to murder man and child

A Carlisle woman has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder a man and a child in the city earlier this week.

Jacqueline Mounsey, 53, faces two charges.

One alleges that she attempted to murder a man in Carlisle on June 10. A second charge alleges that Mounsey also attempted to murder a female child — who can’t be identified because of her age — on the same date.

Mounsey appeared in the dock at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning.

During a five-minute hearing, Mounsey, accompanied by a security officer, spoke to confirm her name, date of birth and address, at Whernside in the city.

No pleas were entered to either of the charges she faces.

A brief outline of the allegations was provided by prosecutor Peter Conroy, who told magistrates that the man and child had each suffered stab injuries to their necks.

The two charges faced by Mounsey as classed as indictable only, which mean they can only be dealt with by a judge at a crown court.

Mounsey’s case was adjourned by magistrates and she is next due to an appear at Carlisle Crown Court, for a plea and trial preparation hearing, on June 24.

No bail application was made by Mounsey’s solicitor, Mark Shepherd, and she has been remanded in custody until her next court appearance.

Emergency services had responded to a report of an incident at Whernside in Carlisle on June 10, just after 8am.

A man in his 50s was taken to the city’s Cumberland Infirmary with a stab wound and his condition was described on Monday as stable.

A force spokesman said a girl had been taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with what were said to be serious injuries.
