Aspatria have announced their first signings ahead of the 2024/25 Regional 2 North season which starts on September 7.
They have recruited two players from Cockermouth, whom Aspatria regard as two of the best players in the county in James Hunter and Ed Gate.
Both will be joining the Black Reds for a significant season at Bower Park – the club is celebrating it’s 150th year as a rugby club.
Mike Scott, head of rugby with Aspatria and the former coach says: “Both lads join the club after tasting level 6 rugby with their hometown club Cockermouth in Regional 2 North last season. Both James and Ed appreciate the importance of playing at this level and have the ambition to continue to do so.
“James is a no-nonsense rugged, tough front row forward who will improve competition in our already excellent forward pack.
“He will bring a lot of experience and leadership qualities to our young side. Unfortunately, he’s currently awaiting a hand operation, but once fit and available, will be a great addition to our squad.
“Ed is recognised as one of the most gifted and exciting rugby players in the county. He can play 10 as well as 15 and will be looking to ignite our talented back line. He’s a real threat ball in hand and a handful for any defence whilst being a very accomplished goal kicker.
“Both lads have been loyal servants to Cockermouth for the last decade which demonstrates the character of the two young men.
“Whilst delighted to be bringing in two quality players with their best years in front of them, it’s even more so we’re bringing in two quality blokes, which is massively important to the environment we want to create.
“Myself, new head coach Andrew Brown, and the rest of coaching team can’t wait to get stuck into preseason which will begin on Saturday July 6 at 11.30am. Training will be followed by a barbecue and refreshments to kick start the 24/25 season.
“With not only our new recruits, but our existing squad who will be 12 months more experienced, we’re looking to improve on our highly respectable fifth place finish last season in what will be another exceptionally tough season across the North of England.”
