Workington Comets’ League One clash with Plymouth Gladiators this afternoon has been postponed.
Rain in the build-up to the meeting, overnight and this morning, allied to a poor forecast which included thunder showers, an early decision was made.
Some of the Plymouth team and officials would be setting off on a long trip north so the call was made earlier thgan it might have been.
The Comets had booked former number one Connor Bailey to guest for the injured Tate Zischke and he was in the Redcar team that raced to a third win in four Cab Direct Championship matches as they overcame Edinburgh 49-41 at the ECCO Arena last night.
He was riding at number two and scored seven points plus a bonus, collecting a win, a second and two thirds in his four outings.
A close meeting went down to a last-heat decider with four points between the sides, and in that race Bears captain and former Comet Charles Wright and the returning Danny King took a 5-1 over Paco Castagna and Josh Pickering.
Wright top-scored for a solid Redcar side with 12+1 and King added 10+1 whilst Edinburgh had the majority of race winners with Castagna collecting 11 points and Pickering 10+1, but they were outscored lower down the order.
Wright said: “They were close the whole night and we needed just to get a 3-3 in the last one, but I saw Danny over my shoulder in the first bend so I thought I’d stick to the inside and give Danny the track to do what he wanted.
“We’ve had a couple of losses at home and we need to pick something up on the road. People are dropping points now in the table, so there’s still a chance, but we need to get something on the road now.”
Meanwhile British rider Leon Flint finished ninth in the opening round of the SGP2 series as Wiktor Przyjemski headed up a Polish one-two-three in Malilla.
Flint, who borrowed an engine from West Cumbrian star Dan Bewley, missed out on a place in the semi-finals on countback having taken one win and four third places from his scheduled rides, being edged out by Mathias Pollestad who had a win and two second places.
Przyjemski won the Final ahead of fellow countrymen Bartosz Banbor and Sebastian Szostak, with Swedish favourite Philip Hellstrom-Bangs was fourth
Flint collected eight championship points from the meeting and now moves on to Round of the series in Latvia on September 6.
He said: “Some positives to take, but naturally gutted to just miss out on the semis.
“Big thank you to Dan Bewley for letting me borrow an engine as mine went pop in practice and a big thank you for all the support, I appreciate it very much.”
