A man has appeared in court accused of burgling a West Cumbria home and inflicting grievous bodily harm on a woman inside.

Anthony Mark Hetherington, 38, faces three charges following two incidents in Egremont during the past month.

One alleges that Hetherington entered an address at Kings Drive as a trespasser, on Thursday June 13 and that he inflicted grievous bodily harm upon a woman as he did so.

Two further charges date back to May 19 and allege that Hetherington assaulted the woman by beating her, and caused £100 criminal damage to her mobile phone.

Hetherington, of Dent View, Egremont, did not enter any please when he appeared in front of magistrates at Carlisle’s Rickergate court.

His case was sent by the Bench to Carlisle Crown Court, where he is due to appear in front of a judge for a plea and trial preparation hearing on July 15.

In the meantime he has been remanded in custody by magistrates.
