The City of Carlisle Orchestra has announced the date of its summer concert.
It will take place in St John’s Church, London Road, Carlisle on Saturday, June 29, starting at 7.30pm, and features as its main work Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony in D major.
The symphony was composed over a period of roughly two months in 1875, being the only one of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies to be written in a major key and to have five movements, instead of the more usual four.
The first half of the concert will open with the Overture to Weber’s Der Freischutz opera and continue with Grieg’s Four Norwegian Dances.
The orchestra’s conductor for this concert is young South African musician, Jacobus de Jager, who is currently studying MMus orchestral conducting with Martin Brabbins at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Jacobus has previously conducted the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of Scottish Orchestra among a host of other prestigious orchestras and ensembles and has won multiple prizes for his conducting.
Jacobus also holds a Bachelor and Master of Music (Cum Laude) in piano performance from the University of Stellenbosch.
Tickets for the concert are £10 in advance from orchestra members, the TIC at The Old Town Hall or Bookcase in Castle Street, or £12 on the door; under-18s free.
Refreshments will be available at the interval.
