‘We’ve got to dust ourselves off’ – Workington Comets boss looks ahead

Workington Comets team boss James Denham is already looking ahead to the next Championship fixture after the heavy defeat at Oxford last night.

He said: “It was disappointing for sure and we were clearly beaten by the better side on the night – so congratulations to Oxford.

”However we have three inexperienced riders on these sort of tracks and it was always going to be tough on a tricky track.

“Cookie was superb all night, it was almost as if vintage Craig was starting to show – as without his score and leadership it could’ve been a lot worse.”

“We have got to dust ourselves off now and move onto the next one against Plymouth at Northside on the July 6. Winning by four points away at Plymouth was a fantastic result and I’m confident we can get this one sewn up along with aggregate bonus point.”

Workington’s three overseas riders – Tate Zischke, Antti Voulas and Celina Liebmann – have all, in different ways, added something to the Comets side on their return to the Championship.

But one of the obvious handicaps was that none of them had any experience of the tracks they were going to face in the Championship.

The Oxford tracks wasn’t in the best of shapes and between them Zischke, Vuolas and Liebmann scored just 13 points – a tally topped by skipper Craig Cook on his own with five wins from six rides.
