Special day for Seaton Rangers in aid of Archie Routledge

Seaton Rangers, who picked up their first win in their last home game, hope to follow up with a clash with Drighlington on a day which is very special for the village club.

The Seaton team will be wearing a special Newcastle United-style kit for the National Conference Third Division game which will be sponsored by Workington Town, Packhorse Pooligans and Seaton vice presidents.

Seaton are fundraising on behalf of Archie Routledge, the eight-year-old son of ex-Seaton centre Mark Routledge who also played for Workington Town in the early 2000s.

Town are supporting his community club Seaton to raise awareness and crucial funds to help the family during a really difficult period in their lives.

Archie suffers from hereditary pancreatitis, which unfortunately has now turned chronic, and this resulted in some serious complications.

Newcastle United are Archie’s favourite team and the club thought it appropriate to wear a strip based on Newcastle’s famous black and white stripes.

Coach Gus Frazer said: “It’s a big day for the club with this charity game when we are raising funds for the Sick Children’s Trust and for the Routledge family whon have been through a really rough time with young Archie.

“I have 20 players to pick from but we haven’t been able to train this week and will be going in cold but I’m hoping we can put up a performance to match the occasion.

“Then the plan is to get into the clubhouse, have a good night and raise as much money as possible for two good causes – part of which will involve auctioning the shirts worn by the lads, which are really smart and designed especially to incorporate Newcastle’s colours for Archie.”

All three county sides are involved in Division Three action tomorrow with leaders Distington the only one having to travel.

They visit Featherstone Lions for a bottom v top clash – a week after their hosts were crushed 98-0 at East Leeds.

Coach Aiden Worthington said: “I’m ignoring that last result because the three or four games before that they were within a few points of their opponents.

“Like a lot of clubs at this level they are stronger at home than away so I’m expecting a tough game, because it will be harder than maybe some of my lads are thinking.

“I have six missing tomorrow but there are two or three young lads who have been playing well in the A team who have deserved a chance and are going with us.”

Hensingham are just a point behind their West Cumbrian rivals and they host Bentley, a side fourth bottom but have matches in hand over all the sides above them.

Coach Kris Coward said: “It’s a big weekend for the club with our Under-18s playing in the BARLA National Cup final so they take the priority.

“It means we will be without the Under-18s who have been playing with us, and we have had to concede our CARL fixture but I still think we have a strong enough 17.

“I might, but only might, have to pull my boots on again but we will see. If we stick to what we have been doing I am sure we will be fine.”

West Cumbria’s three National Conference Premier Division sides are on the road into Yorkshire tomorrow.

A tough test lies ahead for Kells, who visit champions Hunslet ARLFC, but Egremont Rangers and Wath Brow Hornets will be more confident as they visit the two bottom sides in the competition.

Kells drew the home game with Hunslet, an admirable  result against the team that lifted the title last season, but they will be a different proposition on their own pitch.

Peter Smith, the Kells coach said: “It will be a really tough game because they are one of the top four teams in the League and to get anything in this fixture we will need to do everything right so it’s a challenge for us to test ourselves against a very good team.”

Hunslet won 20-14 at Wath Brow last week when a controversial try proved crucial for the visitors to deny Hornets the chance of important back-to-back wins after beating leaders Siddal the previous week.

There’s a different kind of opposition tomorrow when the Hornets travel to Bradford to take on the League’s bottom side West Bowling, who have lost their last five games.

However coach Ian Rooney will have noted that tomorrow’s hosts put up a decent effort at home last week against leaders West Hull before going under 32-22.

Egremont are travelling to Castleford to take-on Lock Lane who moved off the foot of the table last week thanks to a 22-20 win at Heworth.

Coach Rhys Davies said: “It’s a game we should be targeting for an away win but they’ve picked-up a bit of form and it will be another tough game.

“The squads not as strong as I would have liked but most teams are in the same boat with unavailabilities so we will go there and give it our best shot.”

In Division Two Ellenborough are preparing for their next three games all at home and coach Paul Gorge is looking for them to maintain their unbeaten record on their own ground and make progress up the League table.

They start with a visit tomorrow from Saddleworth Rangers, currently next to bottom with three wins and nine defeats on their League record.

“We have players missing but I still think we have a strong squad available and we want to keep our home record intact.

“I could never fault the lads for effort and I think we have been unfortunate on several occasions to lose by just a few points. This run of home games gives us a chance to make up some leeway,” said Gorge.

Millom are three points and one place below Elbra in the League table and they are preparing to host Normanton Knights who in fourth place, but seven points behind leaders Shaw Cross Sharks.

Last week Millom suffered a heavy defeat at Shaw Cross so will be extra-determined to get back in the groove against the Knights.

Barrow Island scored a vital 16-14 win over Dewsbury Celtic last week but they remain in the last relegation place. They visit bottom side Myton Warriors tomorrow looking for the win to move them out of the drop zone.
