Two Carlisle hockey players took part in an International Grand Masters Festival in Holland last week and came home with gold medals.
Andy Bradbury was representing England LX at Over-65s level while Keith Richardson played in the LX Over-70s – in a tournament which also catered for Over-60s, Over-75s and Over-80s.
In their pool, the Over-70s – with Keith at sweeper – drew 1-1 with both Holland and a World Lions side, while beating Spain 1-0 and Scotland 5-0.
In the semi-final they romped to a 6-1 win against Australia while up against Spain again in the final, they triumphed 2-1.
As for Andy his Over-65s had a different format. They played three League games in which they beat the Dutch 4-0, the Belgians 5-0 and the French 3-0.
That put them into a second League where they beat their own England LX Reds 2-0 but lost to an Australian side 2-1.
However, they had done enough to reach the final in which they got their revenge on the team from Down Under, Southern Cross and won the title 1-0.
The pair are off to Germany later this month to take part in another European event, a Four Nations tournament in which Andy has been promoted to the England A team.
The real target, though, is in October when they fly out to South Africa to contest the World Cup for England at their two age groups.
