Barrow Raiders scored a splendid 8-6 home win over second-in-the table Sheffield Eagles to boost their Championship survival hopes.
Starting the day next to bottom, their win and Halifax’s defeat to Widnes saw the Raiders leapfrog the Panthers.
As the score suggests it was a hard-fought contest with defences very much on top and it all boiled down to a penalty for dissent which Ryan Shaw put over in the 67th minute which won the game.
It had been an extremely hard fought opening quarter before Barrow broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when a great break from Luke Broadbent put Barrow away and he had Luke Cresswell with him to take the pass and go over.
Barrow held the lead until the 32nd minute when a kick from Brad Walker ricocheted loose and Joe Farrell collected to race away for the try which Cory ASston converted.
The Raiders were able to get level just before half-time when Ryan Shaw slotted a 30-metre penalty and 6-6 was a fair reflection on what had gone on for 40 minutes.
The second-half was just as tight, and somehow failed to produce a try, but was won by Shaw’s 67th minute penalty.
