Workington train station

A railway station in Cumbria has been shortlisted for a national industry award.

Workington station on the Cumbrian Coast Line is in the running to be named Small Station of the Year at the National Rail Awards.

As part of the shortlisting process, judges visited 145 stations across the country and identified the best for the small, medium, large and major categories.

They were assessed on accessibility, information provision, ticketing infrastructure, customer service and overall presentation.

Consideration was also given to the station’s links with its local community.

At Workington, this included the hosting of the Rails Which Circled The World exhibition, which highlighted the historical importance of the railway to the town’s coal mines, ironworks, steelworks and docks.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern in the North West, said: “Workington is a lovely station with many historical features that have been respected and preserved.

“Our station manager Jane Murray and her team are a great asset to Northern and they go out of their way to help our customers get where they want to be – not just at this station but at others along the line as well.”

The team from Northern will find out if they have clinched the title at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday, September 12.
