Visitors Hertfordshire made good use of the Netherfield wicket on the first day of the NCCA Championship game with hosts Cumbria.
Four of their batsmen scored half centuries and a fifth was only eight runs short as they reached 355 all out in 90 overs.
In reply Cumbria had reached 67-2 at the close, losing night watchman Ed Moulton off the last ball of the day.
Cumbria captain Matthew Sempill had invited Hertfordshire to bat first after winning the toss and there was early success when Ben Walkden clean bowled opener Archie Harrison for 11.
However, the other four batsmen at the top of the order, were all among the runs led by opener Dominic Chatfield (77), David Burnell (42), Galloway (65) and Ben Clifford (58).
Even when the home side removed Cole Seggery (6) cheaply a whirlwind knock of 62 not out off 57 deliveries by Andrew Neal kept the scoreboard ticking over as the tail faltered.
Fredd Fallows removed the last three batsmen, and with the help of a run-out Neal was left stranded whilst in full cry.
Fallows bowled 28 overs and finished with 4-110, while the other wicket-takers were Moulton (2-66), Nico Watt (2-77) and Walkden (1-61).
When Cumbria replied Will Fraine (36no) and Reece Irving (29), on his home ground, put on 66 for the first wicket which fell in the 20th over.
Moulton survived seven balls but with the end of play beckoning he was trapped leg before by Hertfordshire captain Ben Waring.
Skipper Sempill is expected to join Fraine in the middle when play resumes.
