A special game in memory of local football stalwart Tony Barnett is to be staged next month.
Tony was a well-respected member of grassroots football within the county for over 45 years holding various roles.
Following his untimely death the Cumberland County League, West Cumberland Sunday League and the County FA have come together to organise a charity game in his memory.
The charity is to be confirmed by Cumberland FA chief executive Ben Snowden and the game will be played on Friday, August 9 at Workington Town’s Fibrus Community Stadium with a 7pm kick-off.
Maryport Athletic, the County League champions will play Northside, the Sunday League champions in what should be an entertaining contest.
Looking for plenty of support, the bars will be open and there will also be food vans available on the night.
Meanwhile the county league has announced that their new season will commence on Saturday, August 17.
The league will again have 18 teams split into two divisions, although there are changes in personnel.
Three clubs have resigned – Carlisle City Development, Gosforth and Workington Reds Development – but they have been replaced by three new clubs, Workington Juniors, Cockermouth Reserves and UniSun Development.
It’s not a straight nine-nine split as eight teams will compete in the Premier Division and 10 in Division One.
In the Premier Division – Aspatria, Maryport Athletic, UniSun, Wigton, Whitehaven Miners, Keswick, Cockermouth and Celtic Reserves.
Division 1 – Dearham, Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves, Cockermouth Reserves, Workington Juniors, Windscale Reserves, Whitehaven Miners Development, Silloth, Bransty Rangers, Mirehouse and UniSun Development.
Management rule change proposals which were accepted at the league’s AGM were – Match official fees increase to referee £40 and assistant referee £25 while league fees increased to £120.
But £45 of this to be ringfenced to provide a level of financial support to clubs who need to hire 3G facilities if their grounds are unfit and are willing to ensure a fixture is not postponed.
A proposal to abolish the rule regarding use of players that have participated in a league game which is at a level above the county league, feeder leagues and above was not accepted. Currently this allows for a maximum of three players plus any under the age of 21.
