Thursday night saw the first in a series of three trails to take place at Calebreak which provides good, open running and suits those dogs who like the open fell.

The seniors were the first to be slipped with a small field of nine and none of the top hounds were running so it was a chance for those who usually ticket but don’t necessarily take first place to shine.

As they came on the finish there were two hounds with a lead and as they approached the line it was Sportsman for Willie and Daphne Mark who crossed the line in first place with Eagle Girl for Linda Neale, Mark, Josh and Georgina Bryden in second place.

Croft Lass, for Stanley and Carole Jackson, finished in third with the kennel running well in recent weeks. Huntsman’s Quantum was in fourth place for the Little family, perhaps short of a little running, with Ron for the Bell family finishing in fifth followed by David Clifford’s Eden Rayna.

The pups were next with a slightly better slip of 12 runners and again none of the top hounds were running, having competed earlier in the week or off and resting.

Sonny Bill, Snowfell and Millie’s Lass were fancied by the bookies and as they showed they were altogether but as they crossed the line they were relatively easy to judge with Snowfell for Barry Laidler and Caroline Clough getting up to take first place followed by Thorn Heart for Colin Satterthwaite.

Sonny Bill was in third place for Laura Steele, Andrew Bulman and Billy Birkett. David Clifford’s Eden Rosanna finished in fourth place with Millie’s Lass taking fifth followed by Christine Brownlee’s Maeve.

The last race of the night was for the open restricted with fifteen runners. Adele was the favourite in the bookies and it was no sur[prise when she came home first to win. Trinket for Willie and Gillian Todd finished in second place followed by Overwater Eddie for James Irving.

Christine Brownlee bagged another two tickets with Malia and Monsoon who finished in fourth and sixth. Willie and Gillian also did well and took fifth ticket with Tremor.

Racing resumes today with the Cockermouth Show trails being held at Millstone Moor. There is a five-race meeting with the first trail getting underway at 1pm.

Then on Sunday action moves to the north of Carlisle with the Gilsland Show with a four race meeting and action start at an earlier than usual time of 11am.
