The call for a return to winter rugby league might be growing after more games were called off this weekend.
Officials had to pull the plug on three games in the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland League when clubs were unable to field sufficient players.
In addition, Egremont A have informed the league that they are going to have to resign and won’t be playing any more games.
The league has just split into two sections – Premier and Division One – following the first half of the season, and some matches started last week.
The games called off this weekend involve two in the Premier Division – Maryport v Kells A and Aspatria v Wath Brow A. They will both go down as 24-0 wins for Maryport and Wath Brow A.
The other game is in Division One, recorded as a 24-0 win for Distington A against Ellenborough A.
Egremont A should have been at home to Askam tonight but that will no longer take place.
What are left are two games tomorrow, one in each of the two sections.
Top of the bill is the Premier Division clash – Lowca v Cockermouth Titans – while in Division One the Flimby Vikings entertain Hensingham A.
Summer rugby, although nice enough in theory, hasn’t worked in practice because of the many different alternative events taking place which result in clubs fielding weakened sides or no teams at all.
Whether it’s weddings, stag dos, festivals or just family holidays – never mind work commitments and injuries – they all impact on the quality of teams being put out week to week.
Now winter rugby has drawbacks as obviously the weather can, and does, play a part with postponements, but clubs are very much more likely to have players available each week in the winter months.
