Rare tin plate toys, model trains and a Silver Cross doll’s pram were among the highest selling lots in Mitchells Vintage & Antique Toy Sale last week.

Static engines and a large collection of Meccano also amongst the highlights.

The most valuable lot in the sale was a Little’s motor accident demonstration outfit by Charles Thurman & Sons, Carlisle which sold for £1,700.

The outfit contained a road layout, two cardboard buildings, a clockwork bus and pocket toy coach made in Great Britain and tinplate motorbikes, cars and a van made in Germany.

Another German tin plate clockwork toy featuring a Tippco clown on a dog cart also sold for a high price, achieving £700.

A collection of Stuart engines, one electric and four steam driven, made £620 and three Wrenn 00 gauge boxed steam locomotives sold for £400.

Meccano also did very well with an outfit No. 10 flight of four drawers full of Meccano parts making £400 and another flight of four drawers making £200.

A Silver Cross 140th anniversary baby Balmoral doll’s pram, one of only 140 made, with an individual numbered plaque and complete with certificates, did very well selling for £350.

A Rufus Bliss American doll house with a large collection of accessories made £180 and a large Charlie Bear Clyde sold for £150.

Antique toys included a Bontems style clockwork double singing bird automaton, possibly French dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, which was sold for £240.

More recent vintage toys featured a late 1950s or early 60s boxed Schuco 5735 Texi Alfa Romeo convertible which made £280, and a box of play worn die-cast vehicles including Dinky and Corgi models which sold for £380.

More recent toys included a Playstation portable with Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories and five extra games, unused and still sealed in their boxes, which made £260.

A fully illustrated catalogue with all the prices realised in the sale can be viewed online at the-saleroom.com/Mitchells.

Entries are now open for Mitchells’ next toy sale early next year which already includes a collection of over 300 teddies.

So if you have any soft toys, dolls, model railways, die-cast models or other vintage toys you’re considering selling, contact Mitchells specialist David Lomas now for free valuations.

Mitchells next major sale is the three day Antiques & Fine Art Sale from Wednesday September 11 to Friday September 13, on view in the saleroom from Sunday September 8.  To view the fully illustrated sale catalogue and bid online go to the-saleroom.com/Mitchells.
