Former Workington Reds player Robert Cowperthwaite ended his career playing for Melchester Rovers.
Yes, and they had Roy running the show as player manager, still a useful performer.
But the comic strip hero probably was unheard of in Australia where Robert has been living since 1996.
It was a pub team put together by a team of ex-pats who decided to enter their League as Melchester Rovers – and Robert was a member.
Robert, a former pupil of Workington Grammar School came through the ranks at the Reds, playing for the A team and Reserves before getting the first team call in the 1984/85 season.
“I came on as a sub at Horwich with about 15 minutes left. I had travelled down in a director’s car and I only met my team-mates just before kick-off.
“There were some good lads there at the time like John Reach and John Smith, and it was a decent side.
“But I went down to London in 1987 and played a bit there at a decent standard with Tooting and Mitchum,” he recalls.
Robert, back home in Workington to see his father, was at the Reds game on Saturday to watch his old team ion action against Leek Town.
