In a remarkable game at Frenchfield last night Penrith conceded seven second-half goals to lose the Cumbrian derby with Kendal by 8-1.
When the sides left the field at half-time Kendal would consider they had enjoyed the better 45 minutes than their hosts, but it was 1-1 and no-one present could have envisaged the final score.
It rather ended Penrith’s dream start to the season as they slipped to eighth in the Division One table with Kendal still having work to do down in 16th.
Kendal manager Jimmy Marshall said: “It was a fantastic performance and to be fair I think it’s been coming as we start to adapt to this league.
“I thought we started really well and got our noses in front and then a mistake let them back in with the equaliser.
“I told them at half-time to forget about that error and just do what they had been and the second-half was a fantastic effort.
“We have to remember that Penrith are a good side, who have had a fine start under a very good, experienced manager who knows the game inside out.”
Kendal had gone ahead after only three minutes when James Bailey headed in a cross from Ryan Winder.7 –
But Penrith were level on 14 minutes when Robbie Hebson capitalised on a Kendal error to score and the game looked well poised.
Both teams had opportunities to take the lead but half-time left both managers pondering on a game they could win.
In fact it was Kendal who came out and ran riot, scoring seven goals without replying as Penrith collapsed in spectacular fashion.
- 50 – Steve Yawson cuts inside and unleashes a great shot just inside the near post.
- 54 – Matt Dudley plays in Yawson and again he finishes with a strong shot
- 60 – Winder lays one on a plate for Bailey who has a tap in
- 67 Niall Cowperthwaite gets in behind the Penrith defence and squares it for Yawson to complete his hat-trick
- 70 – Penrith defence is caught out by the bounce and Winder sends Bailey in to round the keeper and complete his hat-trick.
- 77 – Dudley makes it 7-1 with a powerful finish when the ball drops kindly for him in the box
- 88 – Substitute Josh Winder completes the scoring with an audacious lob
Penrith boss Darren Edmondson now has to lift his team for Saturday’s home game against Northallerton Town while Kendal can travel to West Auckland with renewed confidence.
