An innovative Cumbrian business, specialising in locally made produce, has closed down.
A Day’s Walk, which had the Lake District Food Hall at Holker Hall and an outlet in Ambleside, has announced that it will no longer trade.
It began as a local produce delivery service during the first lockdown in 2020 and opened its first Lake District Farm Shop at Holker Hall in June 2021. It opened in Ambleside, on Church Street, in 2022.
A Day’s Walk, run by Colin and Emma Sneath, was named because every item of food and drink it stocked comes from a farmer, grower or producer within a day’s walk of its outlets.
The company posted on social media today: “We really did try our best.
“We put everything into it – blood, sweat, tears, not to mention our life savings and pensions – but after a difficult year and a terrible trading summer (especially in Ambleside) – the dream has gone.
“We’ve closed for good. Thanks to all who supported us as we tried to champion local produce and grow a family business.”
A Day’s Walk opened an outlet at Kendal’s Spinning Jennies. Called a sister shop by the company, it closed on August 2.
it said: “The whole local produce meets coffee-and-gelato-on-the-hay bales concept was something new and weekends were great, as were the team.
“But the mid-week high street is tough this year and if we’re honest the space was probably too much for us on our own.”
it said the Ambleside and Holker Hall outlets were run separately.
