Cold calling incidents being investigated in Eden

Incidents of cold calling are being investigated by police in Eden.

Officers have received several reports of individuals selling items door to door in Appleby, Stainton, Penrith and Kirkoswald.

A man has today been identified for cold calling in Stainton and reported for not having a pedlar certificate.

Unsolicited calling, or cold calling, is when people are approached by someone offering a service despite not requesting it.

Whilst cold-calling itself is not an offence, and many legitimate businesses do sell products door-door, Cumbria Police regularly investigate incidents of frauds, thefts and burglaries that have taken place as a result of cold callers.

Inspector Mo Bibby, Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are working proactively to investigate the reports we have received yesterday and have one male reported in Stainton for a lack of pedlar’s certificate.

“I hope this provides local residents with some reassurance. Residents are reminded to be aware and vigilant of the risks of door-to-door sellers.

“We would advise people to be wary and not feel guilty for saying ‘no’ – many legitimate sellers will understand this and won’t want to pressure you into decision on the spot.

“We’d also advise residents to be vigilant around their property security, making sure windows and doors are locked and keys and valuables out of reach and sight.

“Please continue to report any suspicious incidents to us on 101 so that we can take appropriate action.”

If anyone tries to enter your property without your permission or is threatening, call 999.
