A pair of 117-year-old ship boilers have washed up on the West Cumbrian coast.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was called today, Saturday, September 21, to reports of a washed-up container just off St Bees Head.
After some investigation, the team found it turned out to be the old boilers of the shop Izaro – a Spanish steamship that wrecked in the area in 1907.

The boilers are often visible at very low tides just off St Bees Head and provide a little reminder of the village and wider area’s maritime history.
The Izaro lost its way in thick fog and ended up striking the rocks below Tomlin.
The crew made it to safety, but the ship eventually broke in two under the weight of its cargo.

Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team has a responsibility of salvage and regularly monitor incidents like this to ensure there will be no environmental impact.
