An epic story of love, acceptance and what it means to be a hero will be on stage in Workington next month.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, making its debut in West Cumbria, will be performed by Workington Amateur Operatic Society at the town’s Carnegie Theatre from October 15 to October 19.
A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic. Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical.
This production follows last year’s sell out successes of Phantom of the Opera and The Little Mermaid this spring and will once again showcase the breadth of talent of the society’s membership.
Originally developed by Disney Theatrical Productions, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is based on the novel by Victor Hugo with a demanding but beautiful musical score from the Disney film, including Out There performed by the title lead Quasimodo, a kind hearted bell ringer from the 15th century in Paris.
His life changes when he meets Esmerelda and finds himself caught in a web of lies, love and prejudice.
However, Quasimodo isn’t the only one enraptured by Esmeralda, as Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally captivated. When Frollo sets out to destroy Esmeralda and her people, it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.
With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Esmeralda’s God Help the Outcasts, sung by Bette Midler on the original soundtrack and Someday by the pop group Eternal are just two more numbers from this outstanding musical
Society president Norman Brayton said: “This is definitely a production not to be missed, and supporting local live theatre has never been more important.”
The award-winning Workington Amateur Operatic Society will be celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2026.
